Dr. Michael Detsky’s research focuses on improving our understanding and communication of long term outcomes in critically ill patients, including general medical-surgical patients, while also focusing on oncologic patients. He is a co-director of the Critical Care Oncologic Investigative Network (COIN) and is an assistant professor, both at the University of Toronto. His clinical appointment is at the Sinai Health System in Toronto, Canada.

He received his undergraduate degree in health studies at the University of Waterloo, and then went on to receive his medical doctorate and residencies in internal medicine and adult critical care medicine, at the University of Toronto. He received his master’s in health policy and research at the University of Pennsylvania, where his thesis focused on evaluating the discriminative accuracy of ICU physicians and nurses in predicted 6 month functional outcomes.

Dr. Detsky lives in Toronto with his wife and two sons, where he enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching sports and playing hockey and golf.
