On September 11th and 12th, members of the PAIR Center participated in the 2025 Nudges in Health Care Symposium, an annual event organized by the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit. The event focuses on exploring the application of behavioral economics principles and nudges in health care settings. It aims to bring together experts, researchers, clinicians, and policymakers to discuss the use of nudges to improve health care outcomes.
The event featured multiple members of Penn PORTAL, a program accelerating Penn Medicine’s progress toward an integrated learning health system. The program is a collaborative effort between the PAIR Center and the Nudge Unit, in addition to the Penn Medicine Center for Health Equity Advancement (CHEA), the Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Safety (CHIPS), the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI), and the Penn Implementation Science Center (PISCE).
Featured Penn PORTAL members included:
- Kit Delgado (MPI, Penn PORTAL; Faculty Director, Nudge Unit; Executive Director for Transformation Science and Behavioral Insights, Penn Medicine) led the Symposium and provided opening remarks with Raina Merchant (Steering Committee, Penn PORTAL; Chief Transformation Officer, Penn Medicine).
- Meeta Kerlin (MPI, Penn PORTAL; Core Faculty, PAIR Center), presented on the Implementing Nudges to Promote Utilization of Low Tidal Volume Ventilation (INPUT) Study during the session: Stories from the field: Nudging Clinicians for Better Outcomes.
- Srinath Adusumalli (Steering Committee, Penn PORTAL; Chief Health Information Officer, Penn Medicine) moderated the panel discussion: Integrating AI into Clinical Decision Support and Nudges in the EHR.
- Renée Betancourt (Cycle 1 Clinician Leader, Penn PORTAL) presented a poster on her Penn PORTAL project, “Understanding Gaps and Drivers of Primary Care Management of Chronic Kidney Disease.”
The Symposium concluded with interactive workshops. The Joint Research Practices Working Group hosted the session: “Equity in Action: Tools for Inclusive Practices.” This workshop was led by Shira Blady (Program Manager, Penn PORTAL and PAIR Center) and Arleen Lopez and Jonathan Richards (Nudge Unit) to feature the JRP’s toolkit of free resources.
