ICU staffing and organization: Everything has changed

The decisions we make about organizing and staffing ICUs matter, with some effect sizes approaching those of early antibiotics in sepsis or low tidal volume ventilation in ARDS. Yet, unlike sepsis or ARDS, we lack public reporting programs or large-scale studies to describe current practices. Such data are essential for uncovering practice variation for further study, forecasting clinical needs, and highlighting opportunities for improvement where best practices are known.
