Thomas P. Cappola, MD, ScM is the William Smilow Professor and Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine. He earned his A.B. in Chemistry at Princeton University in 1991, his M.D. at Harvard Medical School in 1995, and his ScM in Clinical Investigation from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in 2004. He completed internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and completed his Cardiology Fellowship, including specialty training in Heart Failure and Transplantation, at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Cappola’s research aims to uncover heart failure mechanisms in human subjects and to develop novel therapeutics. This has involved diverse approaches including applied genomics, population science, laboratory studies, and clinical trials. His research was recognized in 2008 with a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which he received from President Obama.

Dr. Cappola currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Association of Professors of Cardiology (APC); is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) the Association of American Physicians (AAP) and the Interurban (Osler) Clinical Club; and is Chair of the American Heart Association Council on Genomics and Precision Medicine. He also leads an NIH-supported postdoctoral training program in cardiovascular biology and medicine and serves as attending physician in Penn’s program in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation.
