About

Dr. Bhavik Patel is a physician in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care and a postdoctoral research fellow at the PAIR Center. He is a pulmonologist and intensivist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also an Associate Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI) and a research fellow at the Center for Health Equity Advancement (CHEA) in the Perelman School of Medicine.

Dr. Patel’s research interests are in evaluating the role of health-related social needs (HRSN) in health inequities and improving clinical trial diversity for underrepresented groups. In collaboration with Trinity Health, he has created a granular, electronic health record-derived dataset of over 1.6M patients who have been screened for HRSNs to (1) identify the most consequential HRSN that contribute to health outcomes and (2) evaluate the role of HRSN in contributing to racial, ethnic and rural/urban health disparities. In a separate project funded by the American Heart Association, he is evaluating the impact of financial incentives and payment methods in improving cardiovascular trial enrollment diversity through discrete choice experiments. Dr. Patel has been awarded a Research Supplement grant from the American Heart Association and the Measey Physician Scientist Fellowship from the Perelman School of Medicine to support his postdoctoral fellowship.

Dr. Patel received his BA in Classical Civilization and BS in Chemistry from Loyola University Chicago and completed medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed residency in internal medicine at Duke University hospital and fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine with a Master of Science in Health Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Fishtown with his family and enjoys walks with his dogs and family, weightlifting and the Philadelphia brewery scene.
