Reflections on the Future of Palliative Care Research

J. Randall Curtis, MD, MSc

Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician
Director of the Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence, University of Washington

Dr. Randy Curtis has had a remarkable career in two fields that, prior to his groundbreaking work and thought leadership, were almost entirely separate – pulmonary/critical care and palliative care. His awards and accomplishments are enumerable; suffice it to say that he is widely regarded as having made NIH funding for end-of-life and palliative care scholarship possible, and for being among the nation’s best and most cherished academic mentors.

Dr. Curtis was diagnosed with bulbar-onset ALS in March 2021. A 5-minute interview/video story with him from November 2021 is available here.
