JoAnne Reifsnyder is a seasoned nurse executive with more than 35 years of experience in clinical practice, administration, consulting, education and research. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychosocial oncology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and holds a PhD in nursing from the University of Maryland, a Master’s Degree in nursing from Thomas Jefferson University, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from George Washington University. In 2002 Reifsnyder co-developed the first palliative care minor focused on preparing advance practice nurses in other specialties as palliative care generalists, at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Reifsnyder has held executive and leadership roles in both for profit and not for profit health care settings. Her career clinical expertise is palliative and end of life care for older adults. She is currently a Professor, Health Services Leadership and Management at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and an Affiliate Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy where she created and teaches two leadership courses in the MS in Palliative Care. From 2012 through November 2021, Reifsnyder was the Chief Nursing Officer for Genesis HealthCare, the nation’s largest skilled nursing provider headquartered in Kennett Square, PA. Reifsnyder was co-founder and partner in Ethos Consulting Group, LLC, a company focused on program development, education/training and research/evaluation to advance end of life care (1999-2005). In addition to her current role at UMSON, she provides management consulting and leader development training and coaching. Reifsnyder was appointed by former HHS Secretary Azar to CDCs Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) to bring expertise in LTC, is a member of NASEM’s Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness, and is an Advisor and Co-Chair of the Measurement Task Force for the John A. Hartford Foundation and Jewish Healthcare Foundation-funded demonstration, Revisiting the Teaching Nursing Home.
