Dr. Lawrence N. Shulman is the Deputy Director for Clinical Services of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, and Director of their newly formed Center for Global Cancer Medicine. He has a leadership role in the strategic development of cancer services for the Cancer Center and its affiliated hospitals. He also leads the Cancer Quality program for the University of Pennsylvania’s Health System. Dr. Shulman is the former Chair of American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) Quality of Care Committee. He is the former Chair of the Commission on Cancer’s Quality Integration Committee. He is the current Chair of the Commission on Cancer. He has been nominated to serve on the National Cancer Policy Forum of the National Academy, a role he will assume in 2017.
Dr. Shulman serves as Senior Oncology Advisor to Partners In Health (PIH), a non-profit organization co-founded by Dr. Paul Farmer, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, and Ophelia Dahl in 1987. Over the past five years, PIH has expanded its mission to include supporting the establishment of national cancer treatment programs with the Ministries of Health in Rwanda and Haiti, programs for which he plays a leadership role. In addition he works with the cancer program in Botswana through the Botswana-University of Pennsylvania Partnership.
Dr. Shulman is a member of ASCO’s International Affairs Committee, and was a member of their Global Oncology Leadership Task Force. Dr Shulman has Chaired the World Health Organization/Union for International Cancer Control efforts on defining Essential Medicines for Cancer since 2014. A specialist in the treatment of patients with breast cancer, his research includes development of new cancer therapies, and implementation of cancer treatment programs in low-resource settings.
He received his MD from Harvard Medical School, and trained in Hematology and Oncology at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA.
